Ordinary airlines call it overbooking. We call it seat yield.
If some passengers fail to appear, the aircraft departs full. If everyone arrives, the system quickly determines which of you was more of a financial concept than a person.
Your seat assignment does not disappear. The seat still exists. It simply has other plans now.
Voluntarily surrendering your own life
First, we look for volunteers. A reverse auction begins at the gate: the offer rises, dignity falls, and passengers publicly calculate the value of a wedding, a job interview and a final warning from their employer.
The winner receives a voucher. A voucher resembles money, except it can only be spent where you were already once subjected to a voucher.
Before accepting, ask about the new flight, a hotel and restrictions. We are counting on you noticing the word “restrictions” after you agree.
If there is no volunteer, one is appointed
Passenger Redundancy Selection™ then begins. The algorithm considers your fare class, check-in time and the amount of hope in your eyes.
Priority goes to passengers who bought Priority Boarding. It does not guarantee boarding, but it allows you to be removed from the flight before everyone else.
If you are selected, do not take it personally. To us, you were never a person. You were a cost line that learned to ask questions.
Your rights, since you insist
Under U.S. Department of Transportation rules, an airline must first seek volunteers and, in some involuntary denied boarding cases, must pay compensation and provide a written explanation.
Keep your boarding pass, receipts and every promise. Paperwork will not bring the seat back, but it will help prove that it left you officially.
What your new itinerary includes
After separating from your seat, we may offer standby, an overnight connection, or the final call for a flight you will no longer be allowed to board.
Your baggage may meanwhile depart without you. It paid less and complains more quietly.
