An overbooked flight is a flight for which an airline has accepted more confirmed bookings than the aircraft has seats, usually because it expects some passengers not to travel. If more booked passengers arrive than there are places, the airline must resolve an oversale situation.

Overbooking is the art of selling the same absence twice. The airline studies historical no-shows, predicts that somebody will fail to appear, then welcomes every passenger who did appear as an unexpected statistical incident.
What happens next?
The airline looks for volunteers willing to exchange today’s flight for a voucher and a new philosophy of time. The voucher appears generous until it becomes subject to availability, blackout dates and the eventual heat death of customer service.
How many confirmations fit in one seat?
As many as the spreadsheet can love. A physical chair has one cushion, but a booking system has imagination. It can hold you, another passenger and a forecast explaining why one of you was never expected to develop plans.
At the gate, two confirmed customers meet like relatives called to identify the same remains. Both carry documents. Both have seat 18A. The airline expresses sympathy for the duplication while carefully avoiding contact with the person who created it.
The volunteer package
The first offer is modest because hope is still alive. The second includes money. The third includes a hotel, transport and the gate agent’s visible wish to go home. Passengers begin calculating the value of birthdays, meetings and marriages in travel credit.
If nobody volunteers, the atmosphere changes from auction to organ allocation. Names are studied, priorities are weighed and every boarding pass suddenly feels like a medical bracelet printed by a casino.
