A delayed flight is a reservation where the airline keeps the money, the aircraft keeps its options and the passenger keeps refreshing the same screen until tomorrow becomes a boarding estimate.
How is a flight delay measured?
Departure delay and arrival delay are separate. Gate departure, takeoff, landing and gate arrival are also different timestamps. A flight may leave late and recover some time, or leave near schedule and arrive late. Always check what a statistic or notification actually measures.
The schedule is a public promise-shaped object. The delay is the part where everyone learns that the object was decorative.
What causes flight delays?
Official U.S. reporting groups causes into broad categories: air carrier, extreme weather, National Aviation System, security and late-arriving aircraft. A single disrupted flight can also affect later services because aircraft, crews and gates form one network.
Information and assistance vary by airline, jurisdiction, cause and delay length. Check the operating carrier’s written notice and the regulator for the journey. Do not infer your rights from one statistic, one announcement or one employee slowly backing away from the desk.

BTS counts a flight as on time when it operates less than 15 minutes later than schedule and measures arrival performance at the gate. Its causal reporting treats flights arriving 15 minutes or more late as late flights. Separately, U.S. DOT refund rules define “significant delay” for refund purposes; that consumer-rights threshold is not the same thing as the BTS performance statistic.
