Is cancellation the same as a delay?
No. A delayed flight still operates later; a cancelled flight does not operate as scheduled. The airline may offer another flight, a changed itinerary or other options, but those are responses to the cancellation rather than the original flight quietly becoming punctual again.
The distinction matters because statistics, notices and passenger rights may treat cancellation and significant delay differently. It also matters because “delayed” tells you to wait, while “cancelled” tells 180 people to visit the same desk at once.
What should a passenger verify?
Confirm the cancellation with the operating carrier and review the written options. In the United States, DOT says a consumer is entitled to a refund when the airline cancels a flight, regardless of the reason, if the consumer chooses not to travel or accept alternatives such as credits or vouchers.
